Forskning och utbildning

Karolinska sjukhuset är en Universitetsklinik som bedriver forskning tillsammans med olika samarbetspartner. I Sverige är det vanligt med register baserat på olika tillstånd. Vi registrera i cancerregistret, palliativa registret, och registret för patologiska frakturer (PathFx) bland annat. Forskning bedrivs dels utifrån data i dessa register, men också utifrån provtagning från patienter.  

För dig som patient är deltagande i forskningsstudier som kräver provtagning, eller annan undersökning av dig, frivillig och du får information skriftligen innan beslut. I praktiken kan detta innebära ett ytterligare blodprov eller ett ytterligare stick vid biopsitagning. Vi följer också upp kvalitet och patientupplevelse med blanketten EQ5D som skickas hem. 

Nedan följer en beskrivning av aktuell forskning på Sarkomcentrum ortopedi.  

Research 

The department is currently engaged in several projects which cover almost the entire spectrum of musculoskeletal tumour research, from basic molecular analyses to population studies. These projects are briefly summarized below.  

1. Molecular studies in bone and soft-tissue sarcomas.  

-Circulating free DNA. In a collaborative project with Clinical Genetics and Clinical Pathology departments of the Karolinska Institutet, circulating free DNA at diagnosis is evaluated with different methods to correlate with the oncological outcome and assess whether it can contribute genetic information such as is relevant for diagnosis or choice of treatment. 

-Analysis of the microenvironment of sarcomas. Collaboration with Oncology-Pathology department at the Karolinska Institutet and the Oncology Clinic of the Karolinska University Hospital, in order to describe and exploit the microenvironment of sarcomas, especially regarding the presence and function of immune cells.  

-Genomic analyses of sarcomas, in collaboration with Clinical Pathology department of the Karolinska Institutet, as well as the Medical Genetics department of the Lund University. Genomic data and analysis of gene expression are correlated to clinical parameters for patient with primary bone and soft-tissue tumours.   

1. Epidemiological studies on bone and soft-tissue sarcomas.  

We focus on the epidemiology of sarcomas, analysing data from large databases. A special interest also lies in the patterns of treatment, oncological outcome as well as outcome of surgery for these rare tumours. Registry studies using data from national and multi-national databases, such as the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Registry, and international collaboration with other major sarcoma centres such as the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.  

1. Imaging of bone and soft-tissue tumours and radiology-assisted diagnostics.  

Research in the efficacy of image-assisted diagnostics and treatment of musculoskeletal tumours, in collaboration with the Radiology department.  

1. Epidemiology, treatment and prognosis of metastatic bone disease.  

Research focusing on the surgical treatment of skeletal metastases and the use of prognostic tools such as the PathFx, based on data from national and multinational databases, in close collaboration the Johns Hopkins, USA.  

1. Quality of life for patients operated for bone and soft-tissue tumours.  

Analysis of the quality of life of patients undergoing surgery for benign and malignant bone and soft-tissue tumours.
